It’s amazing how one moment can completely change your future, altering the direction you take in life and forcing a radical change in the thought processes as you are forced to admit that things won’t ever be quite the same again.
For me that moment came four years ago when I suffered a stroke and in the days, weeks and months that followed I had to come to terms with the difficulties of what to everyone else are normal day-to-day activities.
I had been a car body repairer and sprayer, I loved driving, loved my car – cars were my life, really, then suddenly all that was taken away. I was unable to carry on working in my chosen profession and had to give up my licence. Things seemed pretty bleak!
Inspiration for the future
My wife Andrea was incredible through it all, always very supportive and encouraging. I was really missing my wheels and was desperate for an alternative which would also allow me to regain some independence – something you don’t really appreciate until it’s gone or drastically diminished!
I started using a mobility scooter and the freedom it gave me is beyond description. The change it had on my life and my mental health was so beneficial that I started buying and selling them from our home in Gobowen three years ago and the rest, as they say, is history.
Andrea is company director and I am a shareholder in the business, which has grown to the point where I have been able to realise my dream – moving to larger premises and opening our first showroom in Welsh Frankton.
We love helping people rediscover their independence, as I did, and my experiences put me in the unique position of being able to relate to the problems and limitations experienced by living with a disability. It means I can advise and provide the ideal solution for people to get mobile again.
It’s important for people to remain positive, despite experiencing mobility problems, and there are options available which allow the freedom of movement and a level of independence – such as the Scooterpac Cabin Car. We are the main dealer in Shropshire. It is fully covered, can travel at up to 8mph on the road without the need of a driving licence, has heaters, windscreen wipers, reversing cameras plus lots more as standard. They are eye catching too and become a talking point wherever I go – nearly gets as much attention as my Mini Cooper all of those years ago!
The shock when I get out of either vehicle standing at 6ft 8 is the same!
The online side of our business is being developed all the time and we are selling to customers all over the country. We provide free courtesy scooters for anyone needing repairs, servicing or if they have had an accident, and take trade-ins where a lot of companies don’t.
Our focus is very much on the customer and we always work hard to advise and guide on what best suits their needs. We also operate a 24-hour recovery and assistance service.
The important thing to remember is that suffering an illness or life-changing accident doesn’t have to stop your independence – there is help out there and mobility scooters can play a large part in it.
